 | Evie's Kitchen by Shazzie is a comprehensive guide to raising a child as naturally as possible in the western world. Shazzie examines the breastfeeding culture, the benefits of raw food, and the nutritional challenges of raising a child as a vegan. With a depth of research never published before in vegan literature, Shazzie works out the supplements needed to raise a child healthy, vegan and raw. Her final conclusions in her journey may startle you!
There are over 180 full colour photographed recipes in this book, providing many different meal options for the raw child. The recipes start with "first foods" and then progress to foods and meals that children and adults alike will love. In fact, if you don't have a child in your life, you'll love this book just for the recipes.
Our review: Evies Kitchen is part recipe book and part "A-Z of natural parenting". First, the recipes. Theres everything here, ensuring even the fussiest eater will find favourites: breakfasts, smoothies, juices, mains, sides, salads, dressings, dips, snacks, soups and sweeties - all vegan and all raw.
Yet the author, one of the UKs best-known raw food promoters, believes that raising a healthy raw vegan child is more complicated than many raw authorities suggest, and only possible if you have sufficient nutritional know-how, and also supplement your childs diet.
As she writes, "The differences between an adults raw diet and a childs raw diet arent great, but they are important. Children grow at a rapid rate whereas adults just need to renew and repair." Impeccably researched, the book contains the most comprehensive guide ever published to raising a child on a raw vegan diet, including a section entitled "The ones to watch" (those being vitamins D, B12, K, DHA, EPA, iron, choline and calcium).
Evies Kitchen combines hard science with a candid and engaging account of the joys and challenges of pregnancy, childbirth, breastfeeding, sleepless nights and single motherhood. It is also a great introduction to natural parenting, covering everything from co-sleeping to conscious communication.
